"...make it to track two and jackpot! “Even Now” is rich and confident, funky in all the right places and with a killer vocal by McGeough. Turning up a notch even more is “Bm song”, super sultry with an amazing old school sax, as is the acoustic styles of “how long” (also featuring a less is more vocal by Will Oldmeadow). Even live track “no relief” is worth noting, a sweet song and performance, almost a little Deb Conway in parts. So, basically, my review? Buy the single not for the single—it’s only the tip of the iceberg." Liz "There aren't many bands in this (or any other country) that you could describe as beautiful, but the word immediately springs to mind with haunting violin and flute lines fusing with the acoustic mastery of the guitars and percussion. From the first listen you know that Azure is something different. The Melbourne-based group was formed in 1997 with a large range of influences from pop to Celtic and ambient folk. "Rain Down", one of the more commercial numbers on the six-track CD, has been played on some local radio stations while the band have performed at cafe's, hotels and music festivals throughout the state. It is no surprise that "Rain Down" has been so widely accepted, as along with other tracks, it displays that as well as skill, the group has a firm grip on pop sensibilities. The hook line of the flute on the third track "Take A Look At Yourself" (easily the best example of Azure's brand of pop) confirms the fact that they are one of the best folk rock acts I have ever heard. Azure's music must be heard to be understood, and must be heard again to be educated in its intricacies. There is something in here for all ages and musical tastes. You're not going to hear this one at a rowdy pub, however you would do yourself a favour it you heard it in your bedroom. Sit back, close your eyes and let the music take you. It's not classical, classical music lovers will enjoy its sophistication. The folk influences are evident, but are combined with the fine musical elements of the song and the obvious fine music elements of the band's members." Rating:****
At times haunting and other times powerful Azure cross and explore several different boundaries. For me personally it's always a pleasure work with and listen to the band. Check them out you'll dig it. Keep live music alive." Rob Harwood |
