Azure are a fresh, original Melbourne band who create a dynamic
and distinctive 'groove/pop' sound, and have been playing the Melbourne live circuit
for over five years. Combining acoustic, funk, and rock influences, Azure take
you on a diverse musical journey, fusing powerful melodies with infectious grooves.
Formed in 1997, Azure independently released their debut EP
in 1999, launching the CD with sell out shows at The Continental and the Evelyn
Hotel. Since then Azure have more strongly defined their sound with new material,
instrumentation and influences. A demo recording in 2001 saw the band awarded
funding from Victoria Arts Council for a new five track CD recording, completed
earlier this year. These demos showcase Azures' developments and are the precursor
to an exciting new EP release planned for late 2003.
Singer, songwriter Jane McGeough and Bass player and co-writer
Will Oldmeadow are the core members of Azure. Jane with her beautiful vocals and
dynamic acoustic guitar is a passionate and charismatic performer. Will provides
Azure with sensual and funky grooves playing with drums, electric and acoustic
guitars. With saxophone, trumpet and percussion Azure give an energetic and engaging
performance. Azure's lyrics are a large part of the band's identity and music.
Heartfelt, evocative and with political guts, Jane's writing gives an edge to
Azure's unique blend of pop that distinguishes their music from other bands.
Following the release of their EP, Azure gained media exposure
with airplay, interviews and live performances on radio stations such as 3Triple
R and 3PBS. The EP received excellent reviews, establishing the band on the independent
Australian music scene. Azure has supported acts such as Vanessa Amorosi, Greg
Arnold and Rubi Fruit Jungle. Through their live performances, CD sales and popular
website, Azure are continuing to impress both audiences and critics alike.
Currently Azure are preparing for the recording of their
upcoming release with plans to promote the CD through festival performances, radio
airplay and interstate touring. This recording will show case their latest and
strongest material yet, and will certainly bench mark Azure as fine Australian
home grown talent. Following the release, Azure aims to tour overseas to place
the band in a wider global market.
